Information for tattoo artists and studios

Legal requirements for tattoo premises

If you want to operate a tattoo studio, the premises and each of the tattoo artists must be registered with Bolton Council, Environmental Health.  In order to be registered an application must be submitted with the appropriate fee for both the premise and person to be registered.

In addition Bolton Council operate local byelaws which stipulate requirements for the premises, these must be met before registration can be granted.

A copy of the byelaws can be downloaded here.

The new application form can be downloaded here.

Having a tattoo is a big decision and a permanent one.  Therefore it is an offence under the “Tattooing of Minors Act 1969” to tattoo a person under the age of 18.  This legislation is a matter for the Police.  A tattoo artist should be asking to see proof of age and recording what proof of age they have seen.
