Information if you’re considering getting a tattoo

How to prevent your tattoo becoming infected

  • Cover a new tattoo with a sterile non adhesive dressing for at least an hour afterwards.
  • Keep the area clean and dry.
  • Avoid touching, picking and scratching the treated area.
  • If you need to touch it ensure you wash and dry your hands before and after touching it.
  • Watch out for signs of any developing infection – although some reddening and localised swelling is likely around the area, if it persists for more than 2 days or becomes worse within that period then medical advice should be sought.
  • Weeping should dry up and scab up within 1- 2 days, if it doesn’t please seek medical advice.
  • If possible shower rather than having baths to prevent unnecessary water exposure.
  • Do not use skin products unless intended for open wound healing.
  • Do not share skin products.
  • Avoid swimming, sun beds, sun bathing until your tattoo is fully healed.
  • Keep it covered if working in a dusty/dirty/oily environment.
